Manchester United are leading at Stamford Bridge thanks to Matheus Cunha’s opener, with Alejandro Garnacho unintentionally helping his former employers.
Chelsea dominated possession during the first period and had several chances to score, but they failed to find the back of the net.
On the other hand, the Red Devils only created two dangerous chances: The first was ruined by Cunha’s heavy first touch, but the Brazilian made amends by breaking the deadlock with a cool finish before half-time.
Bruno Fernandes was once again involved in the goal. Bryan Mbeumo dinked the ball over his opponent, opening the right channel for the Portuguese playmaker.
Interestingly, Garnacho tracked back to try to stop his former captain in his tracks. However, Bruno skipped past the Argentine with a simple dribble before sending the ball to the middle of the box.
Benjamin Sesko’s movement distracted the backline, allowing Cunha to slot the ball with a clinical first touch.
While Man Utd were delighted to take the lead at this crucial instant of the game, Garnacho’s negative involvement was the cherry on top.
Ally McCoist noted how Fernandes easily skipped past the former Man Utd winger en route before providing his 18th assist in the Premier League this season.
“Against the run of play? Probably. Quality? Definitely, the majority of which coming from Bruno Fernandes,” said the Rangers legend in his commentary on TNT Sports (via BBC).
“He runs in behind, takes a great touch and it was too easy to get by Garnacho. Excellent pass and a beautifully composed finish. Cunha leaves Sanchez no chance.”
Love this from Sesko!

Moreover, The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell described Garnacho’s contribution as an ‘assist’ for United.
“Brilliant from Fernandes. Cunha doesn’t make same mistake twice, hitting this chance first time,” he posted on X.
“Super finish. Garnacho with an assist of sorts, letting Fernandes cross. Away end explodes. Carrick celebrates then tells his players to focus with 5mins added time to come”

Garnacho rose through Man Utd’s ranks and was one of the best breakout stars at Carrington in recent years, but he didn’t live up to the early expectations.
The winger was part of the five-man ‘bomb squad’ who were omitted from Ruben Amorim’s plans last summer.
The 22-year-old became a highly unpopular figure among the club’s supporters due to his behaviour, especially in his final months at the club, when he was accused of complacency and lack of professionalism.
He also caused a stir after being dropped from the starting lineup in the Europa League final, delivering a rant in his post-match interview.
Garnacho sealed a move to Chelsea last summer, but it hasn’t truly panned out well for him, as he continues to struggle for playing time and form.
The Argentina international started Saturday’s contest on the bench, only coming on due to Estavao’s injury.
