Tottenham Hotspur have been one of the best teams to start the 2025/26 Premier League season, racking up nine points from a possible 12. The rare blemish came at the hands of Bournemouth, but they showed character to bounce back with wins over West Ham United and Villarreal after the international break.
A huge part of that success is due to the stability new boss Thomas Frank has brought to the club, particularly in defence, and centre-back duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been rock-solid so far this season. Spurs have kept four clean sheets in five games across all competitions, and the major reason behind the defensive solidity is down to the partnership of the Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, with talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara dubbing the duo the “best in the world”.
Romero, in particular, has been showing signs of getting back to his former self. He put in a Man of the Match display in Tottenham’s Europa League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao in May, and after an injury-curtailed 2024/25 campaign, the Argentinean international is making up for the lost time.
Romero committed his future to the Lilywhites by signing a new contract after Frank arrived, quashing rumours of a potential departure following Ange Postecoglou’s exit. And the 27-year-old has since been named captain in the wake of Son Heung-min’s move to MLS club Los Angeles FC, leading Tottenham to a bright start to the new season.
Speaking ahead of the trip to Brighton and Hove Albion, Frank was effusive in his praise for Romero. The Spurs gaffer believes the Argentinean international is one of the world’s best centre-backs right now, hailing his rare combination of calmness and aggression.
“I rate him super high. I agree with you that he is one of the best centre-backs right now in the world. It clearly helps when you have won the World Cup, Copa America and Europa League final and more things,” Frank was quoted by Football London.
“About that consistency, now I see a player who is very aggressive when he needs to be and is cool and composed when he needs to be. I think he got that rare combination of being super aggressive in a duel and then ‘stand in the box, I need to move two steps, boom do the header.’ That is the top level centre-backs who are doing that.”
Cristian Romero has conceded only one goal in six games this season.

A team’s defensive structure is more important than the personnel, and under Ange, Tottenham were extremely open. Frank has a different approach and that’s been clear with him tightening the screws at the back and making them difficult to beat. And the new boss has been helped massively by the performances of a stable backline and goalkeeper.
Romero has been a key cog in the current set up, showing great leadership and maturity after becoming the club’s captain. The majority around Tottenham rate the Cordoba-born talent as world-class, and the prizes he has won in his career back up that case. At 27, he is in the peak of his powers and delivering the goods for the north Londoners consistently- as he should be.
No wonder Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was so desperate to sign the 2022 World Cup winner in the summer transfer window.
