Tottenham are riding a wave of optimism following their Europa League triumph, their first trophy in 17 years, despite an otherwise inconsistent domestic campaign. As the club gears up for a major summer overhaul, multiple departures are expected, and key decisions will need to be made.
In the coming weeks, Ange Postecoglou’s future, recruitment strategy, and evaluations of current squad members will be central to Tottenham’s planning. Among those under scrutiny is Cristian Romero, widely regarded as the club’s most vital defender. His future now appears uncertain, a development Daniel Levy had hoped to avoid this summer.
Romero has quickly established himself as a fan favourite since joining Tottenham in 2021. The Argentine centre-back was recently named Player of the Match in Spurs’ UEFA Europa League final victory, capping off another influential campaign at the heart of their defence. Despite his consistently strong performances and a standout first season in English football, questions had begun to surface over his future amid reported interest from Atletico Madrid.
With Tottenham preparing for a significant summer rebuild, the club hopes to use their recent Europa League success as a launchpad for greater ambitions in both domestic and European competitions. However, the uncertainty surrounding Romero’s future appears to have taken a notable turn. According to Tottenham News , John Wenham has suggested that Daniel Levy may now feel less anxious about Romero potentially departing for Atletico Madrid.
“However, reports in Spain also suggest Atletico baulked at Spurs’ valuation of Romero, and it has been suggested that while contract talks aren’t imminent, Levy will do what he can to keep the defender.
“Therefore, I think since the Europa League win, there has been a change from Romero’s departure being seen as inevitable, to now there being a real prospect of him remaining at Tottenham.
“I certainly think it is far more likely that Romero stays now. I just don’t see Atletico reaching a valuation which I think is perfectly reasonable for a player who put in a phenomenal performance in the Europa League final.”
Wenham noted that while formal contract negotiations have yet to begin, Daniel Levy is expected to do everything within his power to keep Cristian Romero at the club. Since Tottenham’s Europa League triumph, the perception of Romero’s potential exit has shifted from an outcome that once seemed inevitable to a growing belief that he may well stay.
He believes it is now far more likely the Argentine defender remains at Spurs, especially after his standout performance in the final and the club’s unwavering stance on his valuation.
Retaining Romero would undoubtedly be a major boost for Tottenham, but with just two years remaining on his current contract, securing a renewal must become a top priority. Without a new deal in place, Spurs risk facing a difficult scenario down the line, potentially losing one of their most important players on a free transfer. Ensuring Romero’s long-term future at the club is not just desirable, but essential to maintaining stability at the heart of their defence.
