Tottenham are willing to trigger a one-year extension in the contract of Ben Davies amid interest from the Championship

Tottenham Hotspur need to bring in reinforcements in the summer if they want to compete for trophies next season.

The North London outfit managed to end the 2024/25 season on a high after winning the Europa League in Bilbao in May. Ange Postecoglou’s men exceeded all expectations and ended the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy against all odds, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final.

Spurs have the perfect opportunity to use the Europa League success as a springboard and close the gap on their rivals next season. They will be competing on multiple fronts next season, including the Champions League, so Daniel Levy faces a massive task of upgrading the squad. While the focus will be on the incomings, it will also be interesting to see which players stay at the club and are let go.

Tottenham officially released a list of players who will leave the club upon the expiry of their contracts. The likes of Fraser Forster, Sergio Reguilon and Alfie Whiteman will depart following the conclusion of their contracts, while Timo Werner exits following the expiry of his loan spell from RB Leipzig.

Another player whose contract is set to officially expire next month is Ben Davies. The experienced defender has a chance to leave Spurs on a high after becoming European champions. It was his first trophy with the Lilywhites, where he has been since joining from Swansea City in 2014. This makes the Welshman one of the senior statesmen in the current squad at Ange Postecoglou’s disposal.

Now, Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham believes Tottenham will hold talks with Ben Davies over a new deal. He wants the club to keep hold of the experienced defender, but will understand if the Wales international decides to pursue a new challenge.

“I think Spurs will speak to Davies about his situation,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.

“With some other players, they might just extend their contracts or let them go. However, I think they’ll have a deep and meaningful chat with Davies.

“He’s been here for a significant period, and he has the chance to leave on a real high after winning the Europa League. I’d like to keep Davies, I think he is a reliable squad option who is also homegrown.

“However, if he gets an offer from another club and wants to leave, I think Tottenham would respect those wishes and allow him to leave. I think the decision will be down to Davies.”

It was reported earlier this week that Spurs are all set to trigger the one-year extension in Davies’ contract. They feel that the 32-year-old still has something to give and provide cover in the defence next season. Also, being one of the senior members of the squad, his leadership skills and influence on and off the pitch adds value to the defender’s name.

But newly-promoted Championship side Wrexham are reportedly interested in securing Davies’ signature on a free transfer. They are on the lookout for experienced heads to compete in the Championship, and the Wales international fits the bill perfectly. So, the onus is now on the Neath-born star what he wants to do next in his career.
