Manchester City scored a huge victory this week when the club's two-year ban from UEFA competitions was overturned, allowing the club to compete in the Champions League next season. Additionally, the team's 30-million euro fine has been reduced to 10-million euro. But not everyone is excited about the decision, as Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho called it a 'disgrace.'
"In relation to the decision, in any case, it's a disgraceful decision," he said. "If Man City is not guilty of it, to be punished by some million is a disgrace. If you're not guilty you're not punished. In the other way, if you're guilty you should be banned. So it's also a disgraceful decision. In any case, it's a disaster."
Mourinho made it clear that he is not saying that Man City is guilty but if they are not guilty, then the fine should have been cleared altogether rather than reduced. But since they still face a 10-million euro fine, it just makes it seem like they are getting off with a lighter, cheaper punishment.
In February, City received a two-year ban due to alleged Financial Fair Play violations, which involved the club overstating 'its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016.' The team immediately appealed the ban, saying that they would be cleared of all wrongdoing. Last month, a hearing was held and Man City was able to convince the Court of Arbitration for Sport to lift the ban.
