Thomas Frank is quietly confident that Tottenham can beat both Bayern Munich and Inter Milan to Atalanta star Ademola Lookman
Thomas Frank enjoyed a productive first transfer window as Tottenham Hotspur boss. The north Londoners brought in as many as seven new signings to help the Dane’s squad compete hard on multiple fronts this season.
They wrapped up the transfer window with the acquisition of Randal Kolo Muani on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day. After his deal with Juventus collapsed, the Lilywhites swooped to sign the France international in the wake of Dominic Solanke’s serious-looking ankle injury.
However, before Spurs settled for Kolo Muani, they had attempted to sign a forward from Serie A. The player was Ademola Lookman, who was keen on a move to Tottenham. The Premier League side tried to sign the 27-year-old on loan with an option to buy, but Atalanta were not interested in a loan deal. La Dea were willing to part ways with their talisman for around £43m amid interest from Bayern Munich and Inter Milan too.
Lookman has been one of Atalanta’s standout players in the last couple of seasons, combing blistering pace with creativity and sharpness in front of goal. After performing consistently for Atalanta, he felt the time is right for him to leave. The Nigerian spent the entire summer trying to force an exit, but to no avail.
Now that the Turkish market is also closed, the forward is seemingly staying in Bergamo. As a result, he has been included in Atalanta’s Champions League squad for the 2025/26 season. Lookman is expected to return to action for the first time this Sunday, when La Dea face Lecce. Nonetheless, Spurs continue to keep close tabs on him.
According to an exclusive report from SportsBoom, Tottenham will attempt raid of Atalanta for the unsettled Lookman when the transfer window reopens in January. They will try to buy the African ace for £20million, with Thomas Frank an admirer of the player and keen to see if his club can pull off a deal.
Bayern Munich and Inter Milan will also revive their interest in the Atalanta man, which means Spurs are likely to face competition for his services. However, the report adds Frank is ‘quietly confident’ he can land his target in the New Year.
It is fair to say that Spurs have enough depth in most positions on the pitch, bar the left-wing. This is an area that they lack firepower in, especially after fan favourite Son Heung-min’s exit. None of Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert or Brennan Johnson are consistent, stressing the need for a left-winger in the process.
Lookman, in that regard, would be a smart fit. The 27-year-old has decent Premier League experience under his belt, having represented clubs such as Everton, Leicester City and Fulham. He failed to cut the mustard in either of the Premier League clubs and joined Atalanta to build his career, which the forward has successfully done. The previous Premier League experience could come in handy for a player who has now matured and in the peak years of his career. The Nigerian star’s versatility in the final third makes him an attractive option for the Lilywhites, as Frank looks to maintain a strong offensive line.
That said, if Tottenham can sign Lookman for £20million ahead of Bayern and Inter, the deal would represent no less than daylight robbery.
