Spurs’ goalkeeping department has come under scrutiny in recent weeks, prompting discussions about potential reinforcements during the January transfer window. Guglielmo Vicario, for all his brilliance in shot-stopping and in 1v1 situations, has encountered criticism following errors in matches against Brighton and Wolves, wherein he was susceptible to set plays.
In response to these challenges, Tottenham have initiated inquiries regarding Barcelona veteran Marc-Andre ter Stegen over the last week or maybe a bit more than that. His current situation at Barcelona remains precarious; sidelined by injury, he is unlikely to regain his starting position from the emerging Joan Garcia, having featured in only nine matches last season. Spanish publication Sport reports that Tottenham’s interest stems from a desire to add depth without immediate upheaval.
However, the club has established clear conditions for any potential deal: Ter Stegen would be signed exclusively as a second-choice option, providing seasoned cover rather than a direct replacement for Vicario. This approach accounts for his age (33), which may limit his suitability for a demanding starting role in a title-contending side.
“I think if they are going to bring him in, he will be coming in on the basis that he is going to be a number two. His age is against him really. His experience will be useful, but he is going to bring cover.”
This is what former Spurs scout and Goalkeeping coach Bryan King told Tottenham Hotspur News. King further talked about the motivational aspect, noting that such a signing could “gee him up a bit” by challenging Vicario to reaffirm his status as the primary custodian, while getting invaluable lessons from one of the best goalkeepers of this generation.
The club’s current setup includes limited alternatives for Vicario, with backup Antonin Kinsky having appeared only once this season in the Carabao Cup victory over Doncaster Rovers. Integrating ter Stegen as a mentor figure could enhance squad resilience, particularly as Tottenham aim to sustain their position among the Premier League’s elite and start consistently finish in the UCL spots.
As the January window approaches, Ter Stegen’s availability presents an opportunity to blend experience with ambition, potentially fortifying Tottenham’s campaign for domestic and European honours.
Such acquisitions will be absolutely pivotal in maintaining competitive edge throughout the season. Think Claudio Bravo for Man City.
