When it came to the final hours of the summer transfer window, Liverpool had had reached a £35 million agreement with Crystal Palace for the signing of Marc Guehi.
The defender completed his medical and was about to sign his Liverpool contract. However, Crystal Palace failed to secure a proper replacement for their skipper, and they decided to pull the plug on the deal at the last minute.
Marc Guehi is unhappy with the Eagles’ decision to pull the plug on his Liverpool contract, which came in the insistence of manager Oliver Glasner, who is claimed to have threatened resignation if the defender left. It denied the 25-year-old the chance to join the English champions, having been a thorough professional throughout the summer.
Well, Liverpool were not the only to have been interested in signing the England international during the recently concluded transfer window. Tottenham Hotspur had revived their interest in the centre-back, after failing to sign him during the winter transfer window.
Now, according to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Marc Guehi is set to be available for a fee of just £25 million when the transfer window reopens in January. It is a 30% discount on the price Liverpool had agreed to pay Palace for his services.
The Reds are certain to return for the 25-year-old next year. The Palace star has been Arne Slot’s No.1 defensive target, and given his rise in stature in the last couple of years, Liverpool would not want to miss out on his services. Whether the Merseysiders return for Guehi in January or wait for him to run down the last year of his contract and potentially sign him on a free transfer in the summer of 2026 remains to be seen.
When the window opens again at the start of next year, Guehi will be able to agree a pre-contract deal with foreign clubs. However, Slot and Liverpool would risk missing out on Guehi in the mid-season transfer intervals, as there will be several clubs vying for his signature for a cut-price deal.
Tottenham may decide to revive their interest as well, having missed out on signing an experienced defender in the summer window. One of the best defenders in the Premier League, Guehi should prove to be an excellent addition at just £25 million. It would represent a major bargain for the Lilywhites crying out for quality depth in defence. A leader and proven commodity, the ex-Chelsea man would be a terrific option to challenge either Cristian Romero or Micky Van de Ven for a spot in Thomas Frank’s starting XI.
While Liverpool will be favourites for Guehi’s signature next year, Spurs must give it a shot to lure him to north London. Stranger things have happened in the transfer market before, so Tottenham must not lose hope.
