Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer business could finally get kickstarted as they close in on the appointment of Thomas Frank.
Thomas Frank has been in conversations with Spurs about replacing Ange Postecoglou, who was relieved off his duties last week, and a deal for the Brentford manager is now close to being finalised.
This summer transfer is extremely important for Spurs, as Daniel Levy eyes a squad revamp after a disastrous 2024/25 domestic campaign. Defensive reinforcements are an absolute necessity owing to the problems former boss Ange Postecoglou faced this past season, which was one of the major factors that led to persistent underwhelming displays in the Premier League.
Doubts remain over Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham as the Argentine defender has been linked with a move to La Liga. Also, Radu Dragusin is out for the foreseeable future with an ACL rupture, while Micky van de Ven has failed to prove his fitness across two seasons in North London. This makes the signing of a central defender crucial, and it looks like the Lilywhites could raid the Italian market this year.
According to a report from Italian outlet Il Messaggero (h/t LaLazioSiamoNoi ), Tottenham are interested in signing Lazio defender Mario Gila. Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also keeping tabs on him.
Mario Gila has impressed in Serie A since his arrival from Real Madrid and in the 2024/25 season, he racked up 43 appearances and became a mainstay at the back for Lazio. The Rome-based outfit endured a frustrating season, but the centre-back delivered consistent performances. Now, there has been a change in the dugout for Lazio after a disappointing season, with Maurizio Sarri back to the club—15 months after he had resigned from his post.
The aforementioned report (h/t LaLazioSiamoNoi) adds Gila is confident that Sarri’s return to the club can help him develop and become a better player. This development could make things difficult for interested parties such as Tottenham, Chelsea and PSG.
As for Tottenham, their interest in Gila is not new. The Hotspur Way chiefs appear to have been impressed by the Spaniard’s leadership skills in Lazio colours and want to bring him to North London. However, if the 24-year-old has doubts over whether to stay in Rome and work with Sarri or leave, it will be in Spurs’ best interest to shift their focus elsewhere.
Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is also on the Lilywhites’ radar. It is reported that Tottenham are expected to formalise their interest in the England international next week.
