Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to improve their squad this summer to put behind their worst-ever season in the Premier League.
They were clearly far from competitive in the Premier League this past campaign and cannot be any worse next time around. By winning the Europa League trophy in Bilbao, the North Londoners have confirmed Champions League football for next term, so will want a squad capable of challenging in that competition.
Daniel Levy reportedly held an internal meeting with the club’s influential decision-makers earlier this week to discuss exciting transfer plans. He is now understood to be leaning towards making a ‘marquee’ summer signing, after Ange Postecoglou’s side booked a place in the Champions League. As much important it is to bring in quality players, Levy’s decision on who stays and leaves becomes crucial too.
There are a few experienced campaigners who are heading towards the final year of their contracts. One of them is Son Heung-min. The Spurs captain cemented his name into the club’s history books last week, helping his team beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in Spain.
Despite a campaign that ended on a high note, it has been one of the South Korean’s least remarkable seasons in a Spurs shirt. Son Heung-min failed to live up to the lofty expectations of the Tottenham Hotspur faithful, as well as suffered from persistent niggling issues that hampered his form.
Set to turn 33 in July and with one year left in his contract, the Tottenham icon has been attracting interest from Saudi Arabia once again. And the Hotspur Way bosses are willing to sell Son this summer if they receive a big offer from Saudi Arabia.
However, Paul Robinson is against the idea of selling Son. The former Spurs goalkeeper wants the club to keep hold of their talisman as his experience and quality will be “absolutely vital” next season.
“He’s a top-quality player”, Robinson told on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.
“[Son] has not had his best season, but is still valuable… Tottenham are competing on multiple fronts.
“His experience is vital. He’s the club’s talisman… will become a legend… it would be an absolute no-brainer to keep him.”
Son is a senior statesman in the squad, having been an integral part of the club for 10 years now. The South Korean’s volumes of experience and leadership skills could be of huge help for a relatively young Tottenham squad that will compete in the Champions League next term, despite his diminishing powers.
So, Robinson’s argument to reject any advances from Saudi Arabia and keep hold of the 32-year-old is valid. However, if the Lilywhites are to progress, they must take some bold decisions this summer.
Cashing in on Son with just a year left on his contract, irrespective of his stature at the club, should be a step in the right direction. The appetite for success among the fans after the Europa League triumph has undoubtedly increased, and Levy would be wise to make a marquee acquisition to replace Son in the squad.
