Tottenham Hotspur are in the midst of their summer overhaul with a new head coach in place.
Thomas Frank has already begun working with the players he has at his disposal ahead of a gruelling campaign, with the club yet to make any significant investment after signing Mathys Tel permanently from Bayern Munich. The Dane’s Spurs will be competing on multiple fronts next season, including the Champions League, so they will need a bigger and better squad than last term.
One area the club bosses must definitely address is the midfield. As of now, the club are yet to sell Yves Bissouma despite having the intention to move him on. Juventus are the latest club to show an interest in Bissouma, and the faster the club manages to get rid of the Malian international, the quicker the money would be available for them to spend on his replacement.
Now, according to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz has spoken to both Tottenham and Manchester United over a potential return to the Premier League. The two English clubs are in various talks about deals involving the likes of Yves Bissouma and Jadon Sancho, and the Brazilian midfielder’s name has popped up.
Douglas Luiz joined Juventus from Aston Villa in a €50 million move last summer but failed to impress. After clocking just 516 minutes across 19 Serie A games, the 27-year-old has been told to find a new club. He is not in the plans of new Juventus boss Igor Tudor and the club are prioritising midfield restructuring as they prepare for the 2025/26 season.
Ahead of next summer’s World Cup, Luiz is concerned about how this situation might affect his chances to make Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazilian squad. Both Spurs and Man United are in need of midfield reinforcements, with Juventus interested in signing Bissouma and Sancho. But Tottenham may have an advantage in landing Luiz.
This is because Sancho’s exorbitant wages at Man United are causing a problem for a deal to go through. As far as Bissouma is concerned, the midfielder is on far reduced terms at Tottenham which could facilitate a swap deal if talks between the two clubs proceed. In that case, Thomas Frank would get an upgrade on Bissouma in the form of Luiz, who can operate both as a No.6 and No.8.
The Brazilian is a crisp passer of the ball, can dictate play, create chances in the final third and score goals. The 27-year-old, who enjoyed a sensational 2023/24 season that yielded 10 goals and as many assists in 53 games for Aston Villa, is also a tenacious tackler and ball-winner. In short, Spurs could land a complete midfielder in Luiz.
That said, Tottenham must aim taking Luiz in exchange for Bissouma in a potential swap deal with Juventus.
