Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been forced to invest heavily into the squad in the summer after enduring a disastrous domestic campaign. The Premier League form was in no way acceptable as the Lilywhites finished the season just a place above the relegation zone, registering 22 losses along the way. Not only that, but the North London club also failed to reach the 40-point mark for the first time in the Premier League.
The dismal domestic campaign saw Daniel Levy sack Ange Postecoglou just two weeks after the season ended. However, the Australian tactician managed to do the unthinkable by winning the Europa League this season against all odds. But that is not the only memorable thing the 59-year-old managed to do during his time at N17.
Under Big Ange, a lot of young players were given a chance to play for the first-team in Europe and the Premier League. The Lilywhites also focused on signing young talents to build the foundations of the club for the future. And it is fair to say that it worked out well for the North London club, as Spurs’ two standout players last season were youngsters Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray.
Tottenham have focused on signing young players in recent seasons. But after the disastrous domestic campaign that the Lilywhites endured this season, Daniel Levy is expected to change his approach in the summer as the North London club looks to bounce back next year. It is also important to note that Spurs are going to play in the Champions League, so a strong squad will be needed for majority of next season.
As per Sami Mokbel (via the BBC), Spurs are looking to add more ‘experience’ in the central midfield position in the summer. One of the main reasons for this might be that Thomas Frank prefers to have a reliable player in the middle of the pitch that can break down play and cover up spaces.
With the Lilywhites already having a few youngsters in their ranks for next season, it is only right that Daniel Levy is looking to add some much-needed experience to balance out the squad for the future. The North London club is already facing a massive squad overhaul in the summer, so Levy will look to cash-in on the underperforming players by bringing in quality replacements.
Tottenham are linked with several players that could fill in the central midfield position under Thomas Frank. It was reported earlier last week that Spurs were interested in signing Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP in the coming weeks. The aforementioned report also stated that the Denmark international was keen to play in the Premier League under Thomas Frank, and a deal for his services was expected to be reached soon.
It remains to be seen what Daniel Levy decides to do now that the transfer window is open. The Lilywhites cannot become complacent following the Europa League success, and need to bring in reinforcements in the summer to kickstart a new era at N17. The fans will also hope that Spurs manage to land their intended targets so that Thomas Frank can build on the Europa League success next season.
