Tottenham Hotspur were all over the place defensively this past season. Numerous injuries to key defenders did not help Ange Postecoglou’s cause and the North Londoners suffered in the process.
This forced the Australian tactician to rely on makeshift options and inexperienced players in defence, and the team’s overall performances became from bad to worse as the season progressed. There is a clear need for defensive reinforcements in the summer if Spurs want to close the gap on their rivals next season.
At one point, Ange Postecoglou had all the first-choice defenders on the sidelines. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven spent major chunks of the campaign on the sidelines, and backup centre-back Radu Dragusin also ruptured his ACL earlier this year to make matters worse. Plus, now with Romero linked with a move away from the club, the Lilywhites’ need for a central defender has also increased.
According to an exclusive report from CaughtOffside, Tottenham are among a few clubs monitoring Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera. Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Liverpool are all keeping tabs, but it is currently understood that he is tilting towards a move to German club RB Leipzig.
A product of the Valencia academy, Cristhian Mosquera shone this past season and racked up 41 appearances across all competitions. The Spanish youth international appeared in all but 37 league outings, as Valencia finished 12th in the La Liga table. He was one of the rare bright sparks in another disappointing campaign for Los Che.
Mosquera’s impressive displays have caught the attention of Tottenham, who are in dire need of defensive reinforcements. Spurs have targeted young players with high potential, and Mosquera fits that bill perfectly. The Spaniard, at only 20, has shown great maturity and understanding of the game and it is only a matter of time before he leaves Valencia for a bigger club.
The aforementioned report adds that the defender and his entourage feel he could develop better in the Bundesliga now before perhaps moving to the English top flight. RB Leipzig and other clubs in the Red Bull Group’s policy have been to nurture young talents and sell them for a big profit, so Mosquera feels he could do well by moving to the Bundesliga as his next chapter rather than rushing into joining a Premier League club.
One cannot fault the Spanish under-23 international’s preference to join RB Leipzig over the Premier League clubs at the moment. So, unless Tottenham are concretely interested in recruiting him and do well to sell their project to him, Mosquera looks likely to leave Valencia for Leipzig this summer.
