Despite bringing in some top-quality players in the summer, Tottenham still failed to address some glaring issues on the pitch. The Lilywhites were in dire need of a new left-winger after Heung-Min Son announced his departure from N17 during the transfer window. The South Korean decided to head for pastures new for this season, ending a ten-year stint at N17.
Many fans wanted Spurs to sign Son’s replacement in the summer, but the North London club fell short of the mark. Due to Daniel Levy’s incompetence in the transfer market, the Lilywhites lack serious firepower on the left-flank. As of now, Thomas Frank has Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert, and Randal Kolo Muani who can operate in that position. However, none of these players have enough quality to make consistent impact week in week out.
Tel was left out of the Champions League squad by Frank, suggesting that the Frenchman had no place in the ex-Brentford boss’ plans. On the other hand, Odobert has also failed to show why should be starting for Spurs week in week out. And new signing Kolo Muani will still need time to settle in at N17 following a summer switch from PSG.
It was reported earlier that Tottenham tried their absolute best to sign Manchester City winger Savinho in the summer. The Lilywhites offered the winger regular gametime in the hopes of luring him to N17. And it clearly worked, with the Brazilian agreeing personal terms with Spurs as well. However, the deal fell through after the Cityzens indicated that Pep Guardiola wanted to retain the prolific winger for this season.
But the Lilywhites are now willing to re-enter the market for Savinho’s signature in January. As per Dean Jones (via TEAMtalk),
“Spurs are still keeping an eye on Savinho, knowing that he wanted the move in the summer. His minutes recently are not very convincing at City. Guardiola told him he wants him to stay but Savinho needs to see how he fits in.”
The journalist adds,
“The next couple of matches should bring more game time for him and will be a better chance to assess where he is at – but it is the case that Tottenham would revisit in January if they saw the chance to do so.”
Dean Jones shares that Tottenham are not giving up in their chase for Savinho as the Brazilian is still not getting regular minutes at Manchester City. The journalist adds that the Lilywhites would make the move for the 21-year-old if his situation does not improve at the Etihad Stadium. Not only that, but Jones reports that Spurs are also willing to offer him regular gametime under Thomas Frank yet again.
Signing Savinho would immediately solve a lot of issues for Tottenham on the left flank. The prolific winger is known for his elite dribbling skills, as well as, his ability to skip past defenders. He also tends to create numerous chances for the other attackers through his elite decision-making and pace in the final third of the pitch. All in all, the Brazilian will be a brilliant acquisition in the winter.
