Tottenham Hotspur are stepping up their transfer activity, as the new season draws closer.
Spurs lost the UEFA Super Cup to Paris Saint-Germain on penalty shootout in Italy on Wednesday, but new boss Thomas Frank certainly had a lot of positives to take out from the game. The performance of the players, which the Danish tactician was proud of, should be enough for Daniel Levy to sanction more new signings before the transfer window slams shut.
Son Heung-min’s departure to Los Angeles FC has left behind a void that is tough to fill this summer. Furthermore, James Maddison’s ACL rupture has ruled him out for the majority of the upcoming season, leaving the North Londoners devoid of a creative outlet other than Mohammed Kudus. This has led to the club making the signing of a new creative midfielder a high priority, and they have set their sights on Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.
It was reported last week that Spurs are ahead of bitter rivals Arsenal in the race to sign Eberechi Eze, whose £68m release clause expires on Friday (August 15).
The Greenwich-born talent had an outstanding 2024/25 season, netting 14 goals across all competitions for Crystal Palace last season, including in their 1-0 win against Manchester City in the FA Cup final. The creative midfielder was a part of the Eagles’ side that beat Liverpool in the FA Community Shield last weekend, although he missed his penalty during the shootout win.
Now, according to reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano on X, Tottenham are ready to open formal talks with Crystal Palace for Eze. If the two clubs can agree on a fee, the 27-year-old will be keen to join the Lilywhites.
Eze has become one of the Premier League’s highly-rated creative players during his time with Palace, and he possesses the qualities to immediately replace Maddison in the Tottenham side.
The England international notched 16 Premier League goal contributions last season, a similar tally to compatriot Maddison. He can operate in multiple attacking positions and potentially form a dangerous combination with Kudus, who enjoyed an impressive night against PSG in the Super Cup.
The ex-Queens Park Rangers man will look to book a place in the England squad for next year’s World Cup, and chances of him getting more recognition should happen if he moves to a bigger club than the Eagles. Plus, this transfer would taste sweeter for our fans knowing that Tottenham stole a quality player like Eze from under the noses of Arsenal.
Currently, it looks like we are favorites to land the playmaker from Selhurst Park. As Levy is reluctant to pay Eze’s release clause which expires on Friday, it will be interesting to see the valuation the Eagles quote for their prized asset.
