Inter Milan defender Yann Bisseck is on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur are planning to improve their defensive unit after their frailties last season.

The North Londoners were all over the place defensively for large parts of the campaign thanks to a combination of an injury crisis and underperformances of key stars. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven could not continue their formidable partnership of 2023/24 campaign for long due to their respective injury problems.

This led to Ange Postecoglou relying on Radu Dragusin and youngster Archie Gray, who is a central midfielder by trade. Unfortunately, Dragusin got injured too, leaving the Lilywhites short of options at the back. January signing Kevin Danso was expected to hit the ground running, and while he did perform well, he sustained a hamstring injury and spent over a month in the treatment room.

The persistent injury problems decimated the squad and did not allow any sort of rhythm and stability. Thus, it is not rocket science why the Hotspur Way chiefs are planning to sign a quality central defender. Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi appeared to be the club’s prime target to bolster the defensive unit. However, the England international has rejected a move to N17, leaving the club to switch their focus to alternative targets.

Now, according to a report from Inter Live, Tottenham are eyeing a move for Inter Milan centre-back Yann Bisseck. The North Londoners have no issues paying the defender’s €40m asking price, with Inter Milan set to make a decision about his future after the FIFA Club World Cup. Manchester United and West Ham United also remain interested in the Germany international.

Having arrived at Inter Milan from German side Aarhus in July 2023, Yann Bisseck has slowly grown into an important player for the club. The 24-year-old made 46 appearances this past season, registering three goals and as many assists. He operated in a three-man backline and as a wing-back in Simone Inzaghi’s system, thereby, catching the attention of clubs with his versatility, pace, physicality and ball-playing ability.

However, the Koln-born talent suffered a thigh injury after coming on as a substitute in Inter’s 5-0 embarrassing defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final last week. So, it remains to be seen how long he will be out of action which could potentially impact clubs from making a move.

Tottenham have to be mindful of Bisseck’s recent injury before taking a decision. If it is a minor hamstring pull and chances of him recovering quickly are high, Spurs should consider going for the defender as he’d fit the bill perfectly at White Hart Lane. At 24, the German’s best years are certainly ahead of him and his acquisition would also improve the squad depth that is going to be essential to compete in the Champions League next season.
