Spurs to Confirm Van de Ven’s New Shirt Number Following Højbjerg’s Departure

Tensions are high as Tottenham enter their first transfer window under new manager Thomas Frank. After ending last season with silverware, the club is determined to keep the momentum going, starting with the upcoming Super Cup clash against PSG, a perfect opportunity to continue their hunt for trophies. With several players leaving and shirt numbers opening up, a prominent journalist now claims that Micky van de Ven is set to receive a new squad number.

Micky van de Ven seems to be well on his way to becoming a fan favorite at Tottenham Hotspur after joining the club from VfL Wolfsburg in 2023 on a six-year contract. The Dutchman has continued to grow at the Premier League club and has become part of one of the league’s best defenses, partnering with Cristian Romero. Fans will be hoping the two can continue to repel attacks for years to come. Van de Ven further confirmed his place in Spurs’ history at the Europa League Final after his heroic goal-line clearance, and supporters would undoubtedly appreciate seeing him remain at White Hart Lane.

John Wenham tips Van de Ven for shirt number upgrade following recent squad changes

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg departed Tottenham last summer to join Marseille on a season-long loan, which included an obligation to buy.

According to Football London, Marseille completed the permanent signing for £17 million, leaving the number five shirt vacant. Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham, speaking to Tottenham News, believes Van de Ven will take over the number—just as he wore during his time at Wolfsburg.

John Wenham, owner of The Lilywhite Rose, advised fans to hold off on purchasing shirts until squad numbers are finalised. He suggested that with Højbjerg’s departure now official, Tottenham could announce Van de Ven as the new number five. Given that the Dutch defender wore the number five at Wolfsburg, Wenham believes a switch is likely. While many supporters may have already had Van de Ven’s name printed, he recommended waiting for confirmation.

The Lilywhite Rose Owner explained, speaking to TottenhamNews

“For example, I could see Tottenham announcing van de Ven is the new number five now that Højbjerg has officially left.”

“Van de Ven has the five at Wolfsburg, so I could see his number changing. I know a lot of people have already run to the shop to get Van de Ven printed, but I’d wait on that.”

Van de Ven has grown into one of Tottenham’s key centre-backs and may step into an even more prominent role if Cristian Romero completes a move to Atletico Madrid. Should Son Heung-min also depart, Van de Ven could be in line to take on the captain’s armband. With Thomas Frank’s more measured approach set to shape the team next season, fans are likely to see Van de Ven at the heart of the defence and a new squad number could symbolise a fresh chapter for both player and club.
