Tottenham have always had a habit of betting on young talent, although patience often runs out before its time. However, the case of Oliver Boast brings a different vibe. At just 16 years old, this youngster is already being touted as a gem who could be part of the club’s offensive future. While the Spurs fight every year to remain competitive in the Premier League, they know that to sustain a long-term project, they must strengthen their foundation. This move is not entirely surprising, but it does confirm that the board is not neglecting the youth academy.
According to Beren Cross, the London club agreed to pay a seven-figure sum to Leeds United to sign Boast this summer. The youngster was not present at the official signing of scholarship players last Sunday because the FA paperwork had not yet been completed. John Wenham, owner of Lilywhite Rose, told Tottenham News that everything is set to be finalised in a matter of days. Although Boast’s age means there may not be a big official announcement, the figure makes it clear that Tottenham are confident in his potential to become the best striker of his generation at the club.
“I think that will probably be complete next week. I’m not sure if Tottenham would officially announce the deal because of Boast’s age. It might just be one where he pops up on the website, or Leeds might announce it. However, it was a seven-figure fee, so perhaps it will be announced as that is a decent sum of money. From everything I’ve heard about Boast, he’s a phenomenal prospect.”
Tottenham must be smart. Boast needs time, a support structure and an environment that allows him to hone his goal-scoring instinct without burning him out prematurely. The boy stands out for his instinct inside the box, his ability to move between the lines and a coolness that is rare in someone his age. His physique still needs to develop, but his understanding of the game and his quick thinking already stand out in youth matches.
It would not be wise to burden the 16-year-old with responsibility right away. The Spurs could first integrate him into the lower categories, then give him minutes in minor cups and gradually bring him up to high-profile games. If all goes well, in three or four years, Boast could be a real option for the first team.
These kinds of bets are always a risk, although seeing Harry Kane succeed from the youth academy shows that it is possible. Boast’s arrival is exciting. He may not bear fruit tomorrow, but he does represent a clear commitment to revitalising the club’s identity. In times when many are pulling out their chequebooks for stratospheric signings, a hungry, down-to-earth youngster can make all the difference. Meanwhile, Tottenham veteran Son Heung-min is set to turn down an MLS opportunity.
