The summer transfer window is still a while away, and Tottenham Hotspur first need to focus on securing their Premier League status before they can plan to rebuild the squad. However, that has not stopped the speculation surrounding the players at the club.
Guglielmo Vicario is expected to move on this summer after three underwhelming campaigns. Signed as a replacement for the great Hugo Lloris, Vicario has failed to prove himself as a reliable goalkeeper at White Hart Lane. He is planning to return to his homeland following this season, with Inter Milan favourites to sign the Tottenham No.1
Inter Milan have reached an agreement over personal terms with Vicario’s camp. As a result, Spurs have seemingly started preparing for life after the Italian international. Manchester City’s James Trafford has emerged as a top target to replace Vicario next season. They are planning to push for the 23-year-old’s signature, and it is understood that James Trafford is open to joining the Lilywhites this summer to get his career back on track, even if they get relegated.
Tottenham’s need for a new goalkeeper is apparent amid Vicario’s exit links. Trafford, who has played as a deputy to Gianluigi Donnarumma on his return to Manchester City this season, wants to leave his boyhood club for the second time in his career for regular minutes.
Spurs are ready to provide the England international with regular minutes and a chance to establish himself as a No.1. With competition for the 23-year-old’s signature steadily rising, reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham has tipped the North Londoners to make a move for Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson if a deal for Trafford doesn’t materialise.
“On the goalkeeper situation, James Trafford has been linked heavily, and I think he’d be very good, and he would come because he wants to be a number one,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“He would be promised that at Tottenham, he would play all 38 league games next season without any injuries, but the other one I think is also worth a shout is Dean Henderson at Palace.
“I could see Spurs also looking at him.
“I do think they will have an English goalkeeper next season, and I think it will be one of those two that Tottenham do go for, it would be a monumental improvement on what we’ve got now, which is a situation where I expect both Vicario and Kinsky to leave in the summer.”
Dean Henderson is enjoying another solid season with Crystal Palace. The England international, who was key in Palace’s FA Cup triumph last season, has built a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. After leaving Manchester United a few years ago, he has been a stellar figure in defence for the Eagles.
As Wenham rightly mentions, Tottenham could look at Henderson as an alternative to Trafford. Both shot-stoppers are composed in possession and have strong command in the box, meaning they will suit De Zerbi’s playing style at White Hart Lane.
