Manchester United continued to spiral in the midweek UEFA Champions League clash with Como, getting trashed 4-1 on the road, fueling the buzz about the dismissal of Michael Carrick, with Antonio Conte and Stefano Pioli among the candidates to take over, Calciomercato reports.

The Red Devils haven’t prevailed since facing Sabah in Europe. Since then, they have drawn three times and lost twice in the Premier League, have lost to Atletico Madrid and were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Brighton.

Carrick might be on borrowed time on the Manchester United bench, and Conte is seen as the leading candidate to replace him, while Pioli attended the Como contest. The English giants hadn’t gone winless in seven straight matches since 2015.

Both gaffers have also been linked to Juventus, which aren’t contemplating an immediate coaching change, though. The former Napoli boss hinted at his next project in an interview with The Athletic in early October.

“There are many clubs that have somewhat lost sight of their history. I’d like to go to one of these clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once more.”

He also suggested he might prefer to return to the Premier League.

“In England today they’re using bazookas, while everywhere else they’re still using a pistol. But we also need to be careful about how the money is spent.”

Our Take on Manchester United, Conte, and Pioli

The Red Devils and Juventus fit perfectly what he’s looking for, and he didn’t openly state he’d take a full sabbatical this time. There’s a chance the race will simply be decided by which team makes its move first. The Bianconeri shouldn’t hesitate if they don’t think Luciano Spalletti is the long-term answer.
