Andre Onana is set to leave Manchester United for Trabzonspor on loan

Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation has been under scrutiny for the past year. The faith placed in André Onana after David de Gea’s departure has gradually diminished, with confidence shaken by his repeated errors in big matches. At times, his positioning and decision-making have appeared to cost the team.

Altay Bayındır, meanwhile, has shown flashes of quality when given opportunities. His Man of the Match performance in the FA Cup raised hopes, but questions over his consistency remain, as he has looked nervous in certain games. Adding to the uncertainty, the club made a surprise deadline-day move to sign Senne Lammens, a clear indication that the management wants greater depth and competition in the goalkeeping department.

Main news on Onana and the current situation:

A new twist has emerged in Manchester United’s goalkeeping debate, with Sky Sports reporting that André Onana is considering a move to Turkish club Trabzonspor. The Turkish Super Lig transfer window remains open until September 12, giving United time to make a decision, but it could prove to be a significant one.

The report has sparked debate among fans, with some arguing that if Onana is to be sold, now might be the right moment. With Senne Lammens already added to the squad and Altay Bayındır beginning to earn trust in league matches, the club may feel better positioned to cope without the Cameroonian.

It is worth noting that during the summer transfer window, there were reports suggesting that United were open to considering offers for Onana. At that stage, Galatasaray were also linked with the goalkeeper, but no deal materialised. Now, with Trabzonspor showing interest, the story has taken a new turn.

The key question is whether United truly have enough reliable options if Onana departs, or if the club risks rushing into an important decision without fully weighing the consequences.

The way forward:

To be honest, André Onana appears to be at a crossroads. If his proposed move to Trabzonspor materialises, it will signal that both Manchester United’s management and new manager Ruben Amorim are not entirely convinced about his long-term future. Amorim seems to value stability, which is why he has given Altay Bayındır more opportunities and brought in Senne Lammens. However, throwing Lammens straight into the intensity of the Premier League would be a massive gamble. The 23-year-old has experience in the Belgian league, but fixtures such as the Manchester Derby present a completely different challenge.

United have struggled to find stability in goal for some time. Since David de Gea’s departure, every option has either been inconsistent or failed to meet expectations. Onana still has the opportunity to prove himself, but that will require cutting down on costly errors and producing performances with greater consistency. If he wants to remain in Manchester, he must show that he can be a reliable presence between the posts, even if that means rebuilding confidence through a loan spell.

At times, it seems that Onana might benefit from playing in a less pressured environment, where he could reset and regain stability. A temporary loan could help him rediscover form, giving him the chance either to return stronger to United or to begin a new chapter at another major club.

In the meantime, many fans believe United should already be looking ahead to long-term solutions. Names such as Emiliano Martínez and Diogo Costa continue to be mentioned as potential candidates to bring much-needed reliability. The coming weeks will reveal whether Onana stays, departs, or inadvertently opens the door for another option. What is certain, however, is that the goalkeeping debate at Old Trafford is far from over.
