After the breaking news that the USMNT will face Portugal for the first time in over 7 years, other European national teams are reportedly exploring matches against the United States and other American teams. Portugal is confirmed, while Belgium and France could also join the schedule.
The USMNT doesn’t have much time left to play matches that could shape the starting lineup ahead of the 2026 World Cup—likely even for the opening game.
Although friendlies are scheduled for October and November, games for early 2026 have not yet been confirmed by U.S. Soccer. Meanwhile, Portugal reportedly secured a match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta in March. Now, France is reportedly in the mix as well.
Following the legacy of Euro 2016, France is considering playing in the U.S., with a preference to face the USMNT—although games against Canada and Mexico are not off the table.
According to L’Équipe, the French Federation is exploring the possibility of scheduling a friendly, but nothing has been confirmed.

The last time the two national teams faced each other was in 2018, ending in a 1-1 draw. In that match, Antoine Griezmann scored first, and Julian Green later equalized.
Beyond friendlies, their most recent competitive meeting was at the Paris Olympics in 2024. France won 3-0, with Alexander Lacazette and Michael Olise (twice) finding the net. This loss marked the first time the USMNT was defeated by France in Olympic competition.
When it comes to Portugal, the USMNT has only faced them twice in the past ten years: a 1-1 friendly in 2017 and a 2-2 draw in the 2014 World Cup.
