After Dayne St. Clair bolted from Minnesota United to sign for MLS Cup champions Inter Miami, the Vancouver Whitecaps locked down its No. 1 goalkeeper, Yohei Takaoka, to a multiyear deal.
On Thursday, the Whitecaps and Takaoka agreed to a new contract that will keep the 29-year-old at BC Place. His new deal will run through June 2027.
"I’m delighted to extend my contract with the Whitecaps," Takaoka said. "I’ve felt the love and support throughout the club since day one, and I can’t wait to go again. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone back at BC Place. Our best season is yet to come, and let’s go win every trophy next year."
Takaoka enjoyed an exceptional 2025 season by leading all MLS goalkeepers with 13 regular-season clean sheets, and he was selected to the 2025 MLS All-Star Game. He finished third behind St. Clair and New York City FC netminder Matt Freese in the 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year voting.
His commanding presence was crucial to Vancouver making runs to the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup final and the 2025 MLS Cup.
"We are pleased to have reached a new agreement with Yohei," Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said. "Since joining us in 2023, Yohei has become a key figure within our club, consistently demonstrating why he is regarded as one of the league’s top players in his position. Beyond his performances on the pitch, he is a consummate professional with outstanding character, and we are thrilled to welcome him back."
Since joining the Whitecaps, Takaoka has recorded 35 clean sheets in 129 starts. Should Vancouver book a return trip to the 2026 MLS Cup final, he will again have played an instrumental role in their journey.
