Darren Bent has revealed that if he were calling the shots at the Emirates, there is only one striker he would have gone for.
The ex Premier League forward insists that, over Erling Haaland or Harry Kane, it is Kylian Mbappe he would bring to Arsenal, and he made his case clear.
“Now, if you are asking me as a fan and Arsenal have got the opportunity to sign one of them, I am taking Mbappe,” he said on talkSPORT.
“I am taking Mbappe because, for whatever you want to say, Kane is an unbelievable striker, Haaland is incredible as well, but not only does Mbappe score a lot of goals, in the World Cup final, when the lights are at their brightest, I have seen him step up in two.
“He was 18 in one and scored a hat trick in the next. I think when it comes to performing, Mbappe is ready to go.”
There is no denying Mbappe could have been a hit at Arsenal.
He has already demonstrated his capabilities with France, PSG, and now Real Madrid, showing that he thrives on the grandest stages.
He is not just a prolific goalscorer, he is technically gifted and a constant menace to defenders.
Interestingly, Arsene Wenger tried to sign him back in 2017 while he was still at Monaco, but the deal never materialised.
The World Cup winner went on to join PSG, then Real Madrid.
Whether he would ever entertain the idea of swapping the Santiago Bernabeu for the Emirates remains to be seen.
Still, while some dream of Mbappe, Arsenal may already have their answer.
With Viktor Gyokeres, who arrived with 97 goals to his name in the last two seasons, the Gunners have a genuine goal poacher in their ranks.
Given criticism following the Swede’s slow start to the season, the debate over which striker would have suited Arsenal best continues to swirl.
But it is early days, and there is hope Gyokeres soon finds his rhythm and replicates the ruthless form he showed at Sporting CP in Arsenal colours.
If he does, there will be no need to dream of another striker, Arsenal will have someone who steps up when the lights are at their brightest.
Thoughts Gooners?
