Football careers can change quickly.
Many players have dropped through the divisions after once being part of major trophy-winning squads.
Manchester United have had several goalkeepers in FA Cup triumphs over the past decades, including David de Gea during the club’s 2015/16 success under Louis van Gaal
De Gea was United’s first-choice goalkeeper that season and later spent a year away from football following his 2023 Old Trafford exit before joining Fiorentina.
The Spaniard has since rebuilt his career in Italy and was even named as club captain.
Andre Onana also lifted the FA Cup with United in the 2023/24 season when the Red Devils defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley.
He is now back on loan for his second spell at Trabzonspor for the 2026/27 campaign.
Now another goalkeeper with a Manchester United cup winner’s medal has made a very different move, dropping into League Two with Walsall.
Walsall have officially confirmed the signing of Tom Wooster on a one-year contract.
The League Two club also hold an option to extend for a further season.
The 21-year-old arrives following his release from West Ham United and becomes Walsall’s 13th signing of the summer.
Crucially, the FA Cup success attached to Wooster’s United career came at youth level.
The goalkeeper was part of Manchester United’s FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 2021/22 after progressing through the academy following his move from Barnsley.
Wooster featured regularly for United’s Under-18s before moving into the Under-21 setup and signing his first professional contract.
He later gained senior experience through loan spells with Ramsbottom United, Macclesfield and Farley Celtic.
He will now continue his career with Walsall, where head coach Lee Grant is already familiar with him from their overlapping time at Manchester United.
The move gives Wooster another opportunity to establish himself in senior football after spending much of his career so far within academy setups.
