After a 0-0 battle through regulation, Neymar scored what was presumably going to be the game-winning goal in the quarterfinals match in the 106th minute — a strike that tied him with Pele for the country's all-time record in men's soccer. Croatia's Bruno Petkovic put in the equalizer to send the action to penalties, however, where the victors connected on all four of their PKs.
Neymar never got an attempt in the heart-pounding final round of kicks.
There's been both good sportsmanship and bad sportsmanship during this tournament, but Friday's act may have been the most heartwarming, given how it featured a child with one of the biggest names in the sport.
Croatia will face the winner of Friday's match between Argentina and the Netherlands in the semifinals on Tuesday, while Brazil heads home. The Brazilians have won a record five World Cups, but none since 2002.
