Cremonese are expected to formally announce Davide Nicola as their new coach on Monday, after he terminated his contract with Cagliari.

Football Italia had already confirmed the choice was made to appoint Nicola for the side that just earned promotion to the top flight via the Serie B play-offs.

According to Tuttomercatoweb and La Provincia di Cremona local newspaper, a statement will only be released on Monday June 30.

This is just 24 hours before the transfer window opens and they can begin planning for the future.

Cremonese begun again with Nicola

Despite securing their place in Serie A, the club decided to part company with coach Giovanni Stroppa and go for a different approach.

They hope that Nicola’s extraordinary record of avoiding the drop even against the odds can serve them well next season.

He managed to upset predictions by keeping Crotone, Genoa, Salernitana and Empoli in Serie A, often with late comebacks and dramatic victories.

That included Cagliari this term, but they promoted youth team boss Fabio Pisacane to the main role.
