English soccer clubs have great support and tradition. The biggest clubs are among the largest in the world, with great stadia and players. Which, however, are the biggest clubs in English soccer? The main criteria for answering that question must be based on financial size, historical success (number of trophies won in history), and size of the fanbase. Based on that criterion, these are the five biggest clubs in English soccer.
Liverpool is widely recognized as one of the biggest English clubs, both domestically and internationally. Its all-time silverware count stands at 48 major trophies (excluding Charity Shields and Super Cups), the highest among English teams. Renowned players such as Dalglish, Gerrard, Salah, and Rush have contributed to European and domestic triumphs. The club is based at Anfield, known for hosting memorable matches. Currently, Liverpool is the defending Premier League champion. Financially, it is the highest-ranked English team in the 2026 Deloitte Football Money League.
Arsenal is the biggest club in southern England with a team that currently tops the Premiership. It now plays at a new 60,000 Emirates Stadium, which is one of the best stadia in the UK. Great players and managers have graced the club, such as Henry, Brady, and Bergkamp. It has had some of the most formidable teams, most notably an undefeated league season, where the team won the league with no losses. Arsenal has also had three league and cup double-winning teams. Although the Champions League remains elusive for the men’s team at least, it has reached the final.
Manchester United has great support and many terrific teams throughout its history. Great players like Best, Charlton, Ronaldo, and Rooney have played for the Red Devils and won many European and league titles. While teams like the Busby Babes of the 1960s are more nostalgic, Manchester United’s recent sides have not been among the best in Europe.
Nevertheless, the Red Devils historic trophy haul is second only to Liverpool. Manchester United also remains among the biggest clubs in Europe financially, despite slipping down the 2026 Deloitte Football Money League. Old Trafford is the biggest English soccer stadium and has had some great games. Like Arsenal, the Red Devils have also had three double-winning teams.
Although Chelsea is one place below Tottenham in the 2026 Deloitte Football Money League, the Blues are a bigger club than Spurs in terms of trophy haul. Chelsea’s teams have won more league titles and European trophies than Spurs, along with a couple of FIFA Club World Cups to boot. The Blues also rank higher than Tottenham in social media and global popularity metrics. Furthermore, the Spurs might be playing in the Championship next season as well!
Manchester City were the sleeping giants of English soccer for many years, having had a few golden eras mixed in with periods of notable decline. The sleeping giant, however, woke up when the Abu Dhabi United Group purchased it in 2008, which considerably increased Manchester City’s financial clout. That takeover turned it into a true soccer giant, with Mancini, Pellegrini, and Guardiola all winning league titles for The Sky Blues. Manchester City has been the dominant force in English soccer during Guardiola’s reign, winning six of the last eight league titles, and could win another Premier League title this season.
Those are the five biggest clubs in English soccer in terms of financial clout and size of trophy cabinets. Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United are famous clubs with great teams, players, and histories. Those five have had most of the greatest teams in English soccer history.
