Manchester United’s summer has moved at pace, with Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow all through the door before Michael Carrick’s side had kicked a pre-season ball.

However, the fourth arrival of the window is the one supporters will know least about.

Tynan Thompson has joined from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth up to £8 million, made up of £4 million guaranteed and a further £4 million in add-ons tied to his senior progress.

The 18-year-old was born in Croydon and joined Spurs’ academy at Under-12 level after starting out with Lambeth Tigers, according to Tottenham’s official club profile.

A right-footed left winger who stands at 6ft 2in, Thompson scored 13 goals and registered six assists across Under-18 and Under-21 football last season.

Seven of those goals arrived in only seven UEFA Youth League appearances, a return that pushed him into first-team consideration in North London.

He had been training with Tottenham’s senior squad since 2025 and was named on the bench for Champions League fixtures against Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, though he never made a competitive appearance for the club.

Alongside that, he has been capped by England at Under-17 and Under-18 level and was part of the Spurs side that won the 2025 Under-17 Premier League Cup.

The detail that matters most, though, is where he has been placed.

It’s understood that Thompson will link up with Carrick’s first-team squad rather than being registered through the academy, which tells you how United have framed the move internally.

A direct comparison has been drawn with Ayden Heaven, who arrived from Arsenal’s academy for £1.5 million in January 2025 and has since played 24 senior games.

Tottenham have protected themselves on the way out, retaining matching rights on any future transfer alongside a sell-on clause reported at between 15% and 20%.

There is a wider context here too, with United having lost out to Spurs on both Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali earlier in this window.

Whether Thompson repays a fee that could reach £8 million will be decided over years rather than weeks, but the club have already made clear which squad he is training with.
