Manchester United’s recruitment drive for wide attackers is already shaping into one of the defining themes of their upcoming summer window, with several young options now firmly on the club’s radar as they prepare for a return to Champions League football.
One name increasingly generating attention across Europe is Porto’s William Gomes, a 2006-born Brazilian winger who has quickly established himself as one of the most intriguing emerging talents in Portugal.
Despite his age, he has already featured heavily this season, delivering 13 goals and two assists in 46 appearances across all competitions, a return that has only strengthened his growing reputation.
Porto, who only signed him from Sao Paulo in early 2025 for around €10 million, are under no pressure to sell and are determined to keep him for at least another campaign.
His €80 million release clause reflects how highly the Portuguese club value his potential, even if no formal offers have been tabled yet despite widespread scouting interest.
That interest is far from limited.
Atletico Madrid are understood to be monitoring his situation closely, while Arsenal, Newcastle, Roma and Manchester United have all made enquiries about his availability, as reported by Diario AS.
It is a crowded field, and Porto’s stance suggests any move this summer would require a significant financial commitment.
For United, the winger search is not happening in isolation.
The club have already been linked with other wide options such as FC Koln’s Said El Mala and Club Brugge’s Christos Tzolis, as they look to deepen their attacking rotation.
The need is becoming more urgent given the demands of Champions League football next season.
United’s attacking structure has already leaned heavily on players like Matheus Cunha on the left, while Patrick Dorgu showed promise before injury disrupted his rhythm.
Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo, meanwhile, have struggled to consistently hit top form since returning from international duty, leaving depth and reliability as clear priorities heading into the summer rebuild.
William Gomes, with his ability to operate on either flank but preference for cutting in from the right onto his stronger left foot, fits the profile of a modern wide forward United are actively targeting.
Whether they are prepared to enter a bidding battle at his €80 million valuation remains the key question as the window approaches.
