Manchester United’s transfer window has revolved around one clear objective and that is to rebuild the midfield.
It came out of nowhere but the Red Devils have landed another player they believe can immediately improve Michael Carrick’s squad.
The club have already strengthened with the arrival of Andrey Santos, but recruitment officials have continued working behind the scenes to add more quality and experience.
That search has now produced another major breakthrough.
Manchester United have officially completed the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans.
The Belgian international arrives at Old Trafford after United activated the €41 million (£35 million) release clause in his Aston Villa contract, with all parties reaching an agreement for the transfer.
Manchester United released a statement on their website saying, “Manchester United is pleased to confirm that Youri Tielemans has joined the club, subject to registration.
The midfielder has signed a contract until June 2031.
Tielemans, who has been capped 90 times by Belgium, has just returned from the FIFA World Cup where he captained his country to the quarter-finals of the competition.
Last season, he registered seven assists for Aston Villa and helped his club win the UEFA Europa League, scoring the opening goal in the final against SC Freiburg.
Among attackers and midfielders, Tielemans broke the most defensive lines per 100 passes in the Premier League and made the second-most line-breaking passes under pressure.”
Youri Tielemans becomes the club’s second midfield signing of the summer following the arrival of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, with United accelerating their pursuit after deciding against completing a move for Atalanta’s Ederson.
The Red Devils had been exploring multiple midfield options throughout the transfer window, but ultimately settled on the experienced Belgian after identifying him as one of the Premier League’s most experienced midfielders.
The 29-year-old leaves Villa Park after two impressive seasons.
Having joined Aston Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023, Tielemans quickly established himself as one of Unai Emery’s most influential players.
Last season he helped Villa qualify for the Champions League while also playing a key role in their Europa League triumph.
His form also carried onto the international stage.
Tielemans captained Belgium during the FIFA World Cup and guided his country to the quarter-finals, scoring twice during their dramatic comeback victory over Senegal before injury forced him to miss the defeat against Spain.
The move also reunites Manchester United with a player they have admired for several years.
United monitored Youri Tielemans during his Leicester City spell and retained interest even after his move to Aston Villa, eventually deciding this summer was the right time to make their move.
With Casemiro departing earlier in the window and Manuel Ugarte sidelined after suffering knee ligament damage at the World Cup, adding another experienced midfielder became a priority for Carrick.
Tielemans now arrives with hundreds of appearances at the highest level, Premier League experience, European pedigree and proven leadership qualities.
