Scenes of chaos are filtering in from Honolulu, as a tourist boat attempted to navigate its way through heavy waves at the popular surf spot Kewalos.
As expected, things didn’t go so well for the boat.
The boat coasted along a wave, at one point, almost pulling off a floater, and somehow not capsizing in the process. But in the end, the vessel ended up stuck on the reef. Multiple folks caught the scene on camera, showing the hectic situation.
One Instagram account, Sandy Beach Surf Report, commented:
"Safer boat captains down da road. Atlantis tour boat tries to make it out of harbor, gets stuck on reef at Kewalos instead. With the incoming rising swells and tide, this could be disastrous for the boat and the reef.”
Another account, Hawaii News Report, wrote:
“Huge boat tried to shoot the channel, ended up on the Kewalos Reef.”
It appears the incident is still very fresh; from what it seems like, it just happened this morning Hawaii time. So, as of now, specifics about what happened, any injuries, or anything like that are scarce. But the boat definitely sustained some damage after being dry-docked. No doubt. As for the passengers, who knows. Fingers crossed.
The boat comes from Atlantis Cruises, a luxury boat service offering whale watching tours, sunset cocktail hour cruises, and more. As for the boat in particular:
“There is nothing quite like our 150' sleek, modern ship with three spacious levels to soak in the beauty of Waikiki's cerulean seas and spectacular coastline. Grab a handcrafted cocktail and get ready for Hawaii's magical sunset and sparkling city lights.”
It harkens back to the age-old adage, often reserved for surfing, “When in doubt, don’t go out.” Turns out, it applies to boats, too.
