Vaya con dios.

Turns out, the iconic and kitschy farewell from Patrick Swayze (playing Bodhi) uttered to Keanu Reeves (Johnny Utah), before he evades capture, and catches one final, deadly wave wasn’t a goodbye for good. Point Break, the 1991 cult-classic, is being rebooted…again.

In an exclusive, Deadline broke the news.

AMC secured the rights to develop the Point Break television reboot, in what Deadline said: “the network won the project in a highly competitive situation.”

The original film, as many will know, follows Reeves as a hungry FBI Agent, who infiltrates a group of surfers who rob banks in their spare time, led by Swayze, and dubbed the “Ex-Presidents.” Through his undercover sting operation, Reeves’ Johnny Utah falls in love with surfing, and a female surfer adjacent to the gang (Tyler, played by Lori Petty).

Gary Busey plays a peak Gary Busey role as FBI Agent Angelo Pappas; Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers makes an appearance; Matt Archbold stunt-doubled for Swayze; and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) directed the film.

“I caught my first tube this morning, sir,” Reeves says with smirk to his superior, among many other memorable (and cringey) quotes from the film. Hence its cult-classic status amongst surfers and non-surfers, akin to its bedfellow, North Shore (1987).

As for the new TV series, per Deadline: “The series is set 35 years after the events of the original film and is focused on a dangerous heist crew with ties to the Ex-Presidents gang.”

No word on casting, or when the new series will come out.

It’s also not the first time that Point Break has been redone in the Hollywood machine that loves spinoffs, sequels, remakes, and the like. It was recreated in 2015 under the same name, but this time featuring CGI big wave antics, and pretty much flopped.

So, are we excited for the new TV series?
