Consider the long arc of Josh Kerr’s surfing career. He was an airshow kingpin in the early 2000s, a scrappy rookie on the 2007 Championship Tour and, by the time he retired in 2017, a well-rounded veteran known for putting his head down at The Box, Pipeline and even Maverick’s.
But I’d argue that the 41-year-old’s surfing has never felt more complete nor looked more compelling than what he’s doing right now. After making a name and paycheck for himself on thrusters, it’s his penchant for delivering hair-raising turns at blistering speed on twin fins that has resonated with many surfers across the age spectrum.
Josh’s froth in twin-fin design is such that he launched his own board brand, Draft Surf, last year. The boards are his designs, but they’re built by the team at Spot X Productions in Coolangatta. Josh recently launched his latest model, the Overdrive, which you can check out in the video above. He calls it a mix of a mid-length and a classic fish, yet he puts it on rail like he does everything else. “The whole goal behind this board was to blend the lines of a classic fish into a true performance board,” Josh said. “And I feel like we nailed it with this one.”
If you’re a visual learner, skip the breakdown to watch Josh do some delightful R&D across Indonesia. The Keramas section at the end is particularly satisfying and a reminder that "retirement" hasn't done a thing to impede good, compelling surfing.
