Well, the days are officially shorter and the surf is getting noticeably better and although the water may still be warm, one thing is for certain, summer is fading into the rearview. The best word to describe it may be bittersweet, as it is sad to say goodbye to the joy of longer days and simultaneously exciting to imagine what fall and winter will bring.
In a fine look back at the summer surf at San Onofre, one of my favorite spots to spend a nice summer’s day, Grant Noble recently released SUMMER FUN 16mm, filmed and edited by Alexio Mah.
In it we see Grant, one of Southern California’s finest stylists, who can both rip in the water and shred in the shaping bay, making the most of small surf in the wave park that is our beloved San O. Riding a self-shaped 9’6 model he calls the Sangria, talk about a fine pairing for a hot day, he makes the most out of each ride to the point that, if you were watching from the lot, you would be like, ‘damn, it looks fun out there!’
Grant shapes everything from fishes to logs and, whatever it is he’s riding, he makes it easy on the eyes. He was recently featured in Alex Knost’s latest film Choice Glance alongside Mikey February, Holly Wawn, and was also featured in the Daydream Surf Shop "Field Notes" Series. If you’re interested in checking out some of his shapes, reach out to him on IG or cruise up to Daydream in Costa Mesa to check their stock and demo selections, chances are you’ll find something of his that you’ll love.
Daydream owner, Kyle Kennelly, has watched Grant since grom-hood and says, “Now Grant has grown out of the puppy dog phase and has matured into a young man with a strong foundational style to his surfboard designs. His talent in and out of the water continues to build towards exponential growth. It’s insane to watch someone breaking the scale of good surfing year after year and that’s what’s informing his shaping to continue to reach new heights. All this growth is juxtaposed by the continuity of the same old wow factor that first caught my eye as Grant continues to get blown out of tubes and pull off switch noserides here in Newport, it seems like that will never change.”
