You’d be forgiven for believing Sardinia, surrounded by land masses of Italy, Corsica and Africa, would have no hope of surfable waves. And yet its west coast faces just enough fetch for the Mediterranean Sea to occasionally send surf to the island’s pristine shores.

There’s a tight-knit surf community on Sardinia as well, something Dylan Graves taps into on his latest vlog while visiting the “Hawaii of the Mediterranean.” Thanks to the good graces of Italian surfers Roby D’Amico, Lorenzo Castagna, and father-and-son Fabio and Dani Mereu, Dylan explores an oft-overlooked but nonetheless beautiful surf scene.

Sardinia is known worldwide for its sheer cliffs, natural beauty and mysterious “nuraghi,” ancient stone structures built in the Bronze Age between 1900 and 730 BC. There are an estimated 7,000 of them throughout the island, and they are found nowhere else in the world.

Unlike the tourist attractions, however, the waves you’ll see above aren’t found in any guidebook. You need to be in the know. “You cannot surf every day,” said Sardinian local Antonio Benoni. “So you need to find your waves and you need to find the time to catch the waves. All those things make this thing special.”

And getting around is not all that pleasant either as mountainous terrain, long drives and winding, gut-clenching roads are the norm. Brave the trip and the reefs, however, and you can feast on fresh Italian food after a session.

“I heard Sardinian road builders are widely sought after in towns where tricky roads need to be built,” Dylan concludes at the end of the video. “Because they have so much practice. And I kinda feel like there's some parallels in the surf scene here. With challenging waves and having the will to drive 100 kilometers between breaks, you gotta be committed here. And they're better surfers because of it.”
