Fantasy: Title Race Heats Up At World's Best Pointbreak

When we started the year in Hawaii, we all had a pretty good idea who would be at the top of the rankings when we arrived at the homestretch in July.  Well, here we are in July, and quite honestly, there have been a few surprises. Jordy Smith and Molly Picklum are you ratings leaders.  Molly we expected to be at or near the top, but Jordy has had quite the resurgence. Griffin Colapinto, Filipe Toledo, and Jack Robinson have had decent years so far, but all are on the outside looking in as the tour steams into J-Bay this week.

There are a few names near the top of the leaderboard that if they are to not perform well at J-Bay, they can legitimately write off their chances at a championship as Ta=hiti will not be kind to them.  You could likely put Filipe Toledo in that category.  Without a huge result at J-Bay, history suggests he will be left wanting when the tour arrives in Tahiti.  That means we could be looking at an absolutely unhinged performance from the 3 time event winner.  Or the pressure could rock him to his core.

Look out for Italo Ferreira, Ethan Ewing, and Jack Robinson who all need a big result as well to lock themselves into the Top 5.  All three will be heavy favorites to win this event.  On the women's side, the two-woman-show that was Molly Picklum vs Caitlin Simmers has picked up a few strong contenders as well.  Gabriel Bryan, Isabella Nichols, and Bettylou Sakura Johnson are all contenders to take out any event.  And with fewer surfers in the draw after the mid-year cut, their odds are even better.
