Over this past winter I had the pleasure of connecting with Schuyler Allen on the North Shore of Oahu. We first met in San Francisco for a chilly session at Ocean Beach, a few months before he went back to Hawaii, and it was clear then that his travel plans were very fire and ice.
The Dark Side, the latest film from dark seas is exactly that, a wild ride across the globe from the tropical waters of Hawaii and Mexico to surfing in brutal winter storms on the East Coast and frigid slabs in Ireland. I recently caught up with Schuyler for some intel on what went on during the making of the film.
Schuyler Allen: "The film kicks off in Hawaii with Dylan Hord, Duran Barr, and myself roaming the North Shore before hopping over to Maui to link with Braiden Maither, Kai Barger, and Tyler Larronde—who closes the section with some psycho waves at Pe’ahi from last winter.
From there, we traded crowds for cold and hucked carcass in Ireland and along the East Coast for a couple of brutal winter storms. Surfing heavy waves in the cold really is a different beast, and can be mentally and physically taxing but there’s a shared respect and comradery in those places that warms you.
Next stop was to thaw out the rigs in Mexico. We welcomed North Carolina’s Owen Moss on his first trip with us. His last wave in the film (not the credits) was actually his first wave of the trip—we knew he got the ender the moment we saw it. Expect big things from this kid, he’s going to blow some minds.
I feel very lucky to be part of a brand today that supports core surfing - it’s rare. I’m honored to make a surf film but more than anything, I hope it shines a light on this underground, insanely talented crew. It was fun getting tubed and cutting it up."
