Bali is often referred to as the “Island of the Gods.”

A majestic archipelago, rife with world-class surf spots, teeming with tropical beauty – it’s no wonder that some visitors to this island destination want to take it all in from the glory of a bird’s eye view perspective. But one helicopter tour went terribly wrong.

As seen below, miraculous survivors of a helicopter crash in Bali speak out.

“I’m upside down,” 47-year-old Australian, Russell Harris, recounted. "I cannot release myself; I cannot get out; I’m trying with all my life. Because all I’m looking at was this fluid dripping in front of me. I’m thinking – I’ve survived the fall, but now, I’m about to die in a fireball.”

The accident happened a year ago, but now, Harris and his Indonesian partner Keylla are resurfacing the footage after fallout with the helicopter company.

“Since the accident, I cannot work,” said Keylla. “I cannot even take care of my kids. So, these people need to know that our lives are totally messed.”

The couple are embroiled in a legal battle with the helicopter company, Whitesky Aviation. They claim the company stopped paying their legal bills after three months.

What was the cause of the crash? Apparently, a kite string – yes, like a kite one would fly at the beach – got caught in the rotors, as the bird passed over the iconic surf spot, Uluwatu.

And now, even one year after the incident, the couple is still fighting.

“If they stuck to their agreement, and we got the treatment we were supposed to get, we would be sitting here in more of a comfortable state,” Harris continued. “Absolutely.”

Get this – it’s not the first time a helicopter has gone done due to this exact reason, either. According to an investigation, two other recent crashes were caused by the same issue.

“This needs to stop,” Harris added. “We were lucky. Unfortunately, the next person might not be.”
