In recent times, the advent of hydrofoil surfboards has ignited much debate amongst the wave-riding community. Essentially, foils are a guillotine gliding beneath the surface, prepped to potentially scalp any surfer who happens to be in their path.

Then came electric hydrofoils, and the debate raged even more blistering.

And one recent clip from the Gold Coast of Australia shows exactly why this conflict – the battle between foil surfers and traditional surfers – is a contentious topic. So contentious that even Kelly Slater decided to chime in. Check it out below.

So, some quick context before we dive into the debate.

The unnamed electric hydrofoil surfer catches a wave from far outside, something these motorized crafts are capable of doing, unlike traditional surfboards one would paddle. Per the video, the electric hydrofoil surfer narrates:

“I’ve been on this wave now for well over 30 seconds. There’s nobody anywhere near me. There’s no surfers. Then, a surfer decides to drop in on the inside. I’ve been on this wave now for 35 seconds, and he decides to come in. Instead of respecting that I’ve been on the wave for freaking forever, he keeps going. It looks like I dropped in. I didn’t.”

Cue the controversy. Who’s in the wrong here?

Well, the comments section on the video ignited with various opinions.

Kelly Slater, always keen for a good debate, wrote: “Surely this guy can’t be this unaware?” (Presumably referring to the hydrofoil surfer.) The squabble continued, with others challenging the GOAT, egging him on, and prying provocative statements.

Elsewhere, Florida foil lord Eric Geiselman gave his opinion. Here’s the condensed version, but from his perspective, the foiler was in the wrong here.

“Sorry mate, that’s not the right line in at all,” Geiselman wrote. “Common sense would have told you you’re on the wave of the day on a righthand point with surfers (already wrong)… Could have rode the same wave kicked out off the shoulder…Bottom line get the foil into zones with no surfers.”
