In a move more akin to Tom Cruise in a Mission Impossible flick, two men just smashed an obscure Guinness World Record – the “Highest Kite Surf Tow-Up.”
Kite surfer Jake Scrace and stuntman Chey Anich pulled off the feat near England’s Isle of Wight. And just how did they do it? Well, Anich towed Scrace into the air from a paramotor, then they unhooked and Scrace fell from the sky, landing successfully. The previous record for such a stunt was 908.7-feet, which is nearly half this new record.
Check it out below.
“It was the biggest challenge I’ve ever taken on,” Scrace said. “Up there, it was about trusting the team, the conditions, and just going for it. The sense of freedom was incredible and I’m buzzing that we got the record on the first attempt. I’m already thinking about what the next stunt could be and where we can go with it.”
The stunt was months in the making, and the record was certified using, “drones, bodycams, altimeter readings, as well as GPS-enabled smartphones recording altitude and flight path, and synchronized footage from take-off to water landing.”
As for the folks over at the Guinness World Records, here’s what official adjudicator PravinPatel had to say about the record-smashing stunt:
“At Guinness World Records, we celebrate extraordinary feats that push the boundaries of human achievement. Gleeds’ record-breaking kitesurf tow-up is a stunning example of innovation, precision, and daring that reflects their value of professionalism with personality and a fitting tribute to 150 years in business. We’re proud to officially recognize this milestone as part of our mission to showcase the most remarkable accomplishments from around the world.”
Kudos to the crew on the achievement. But seriously, let’s get Tom Cruise out there and see if he can double it. He’s only, what, 70 years old? (Kidding.)
