On Thursday, two tourists were out for a swim in Australia.
They were near a popular surf spot in New South Wales – Kylies Beach at Crowdy Bay near Port Macquarie, about 218 miles north of Sydney – when tragedy struck.
A suspected bull shark attacked the couple, leaving one in critical condition, and the other dead.
“A woman aged in her mid-20s,” said Inspector Timothy Bayly of the NSW Police. “She’s passed away at the scene. A male, also in his mid-20s, suffered serious injuries.”
Bystanders on the beach were quick in response to the incident, tying a makeshift tourniquet around the man. He was later airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. As for the woman, mentioned above, she sadly passed away at the scene.
“It’s really important to note that there were really good bystanders administering aid to the male patient,” said NSW Ambulance member Joshua Smyth.
The beach was closed following the incident, and authorities have installed five SMART drumlines to the area to monitor further shark activity.
Just over two months ago, in the New South Wales region, surfer Mercury Psillakas was attacked and killed by a suspected great white shark while in the water near Dee Why in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. That attack rocked the surf world and beyond.
Following the incident, the 57-year-old’s wife, Maria, spoke out:
“Losing Merc has left a place in my heart that I can’t really put into words,” Maria Psillakis said. “He is…was…my rock, my everything. I have a little girl that keeps on asking, ‘why?’ And I don’t know what to tell her.”
