In the renaissance and medieval eras, the sport of jousting was a popular spectacle. Two knights on horseback, armed with lances – long, wooden spears – charge towards one another, and attempt to knock the other off their steed, thus winning the match.
Today, the practice is largely archaic, no longer practiced.
Unless you go to Medieval Times, stepping back in time, and chomping on a turkey leg. Or, occasionally, it can happen in surfing, with two surfers – one surfer going right, the other going left – and rushing towards each other, neither willing to back down, both boldly resolute on smashing the end section. Like this clip below, modern-day surf jousting.

The clip comes from a Surfline Cam Rewind, featuring two surfers on the southside of Huntington Beach Pier. It’s a notably crowded surf zone, quite popular amongst southern California natives. So, it’s not much of a surprise that the occasional collision goes down.
As the opponents race down their respective lines, one coming left, the other from the right, they both eye down a section in the middle, keen on launching off it. Neither backs down. And thus, the two punt, and crash into one another mid-flight.
Who won the match. Unclear.
In the comments, most chirped about the crazy crowds that infiltrate the Orange County surf arenas, especially in HB, and especially during the summer season.
“Lots of that lately,” wrote one commentor.
“Cali clowns in danger [sic] everyone,” wrote another.
“How are they endangering anyone but themslefes [sic],” questioned another.
As for the report from Surfline, “They were okay.” And it comes from a series, the surf cam giant has going right now – a Summer Rewind Challenge. Here’s some deets:
“This summer, we’re celebrating the unforgettable moments that unfold in front of Surfline cams. Capture a Cam Rewind that matches one of the categories below and post it to Instagram for your chance at $1,000 and a weekly prize pack.”
Should the jousters take (split) the weekly win? Stay tuned for more.
