Teahupo'o Wipeout Kills American Surfer in Harrowing Reef Impact

Tragedy has struck the surfing world after a 56-year-old American surfer passed away following a severe wipeout at Tahiti's infamous reefbreak, Teahupo'o.

While full details surrounding the incident remain scarce – early reports are stating that the victim was Patrick Phillips of San Diego – the word is that the surfer was in the water with a group of friends late on a Thursday afternoon when the accident occurred.

Though Teahupo'o is globally feared for its apocalyptic size during massive swells, the ocean proved that even smaller, less intimidating days at the shallow slab carry incredibly heavy consequences. Teahupo’o community mayor Milton Parker confirmed the tragic nature of the wipeout to local media.

“The victim fell off his board, hit his head on the reef, and broke two vertebrae in his neck,” Mayor Parker stated.

Because the surf was on the smaller side, no official water patrol was operating in the lineup at the time. However, another American surfer in the small crowd quickly swam to the victim and miraculously managed to resuscitate him directly in the water.

Bystanders quickly administered first aid, rushing the unconscious surfer to land by boat. He was initially taken to Taravao Hospital before being transferred to the French Polynesia Hospital Centre (CHPF).

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the surfer remained in critical condition for several days and ultimately passed away late in the evening on June 19th.

Fatalities at the dangerous Tahitian venue are historically rare due to tight safety protocols during big events, making this loss reverberate deeply through the global surf community. The last recorded death at the break was local Tahitian surfer Brice Taerea back in 2000.

This is a developing story; SURFER has reached out to those in Tahiti who may have been involved in the rescue operation, but have yet to hear back.
