Less than 30 percent of the ocean seafloor has been mapped.
It’s often said that we know more about the moon, than we do about the ocean, due to statistics like that. But, in fact, that popular saying is outdated by about 70 years.
However, that still means that the ocean is still a major mystery to humans, with much more to explore. And there are discoveries happening all the time – sometimes unexplained. Below, dive into some of the weirdest ocean findings in human history…so far.

For centuries, many believed the giant squid to merely be a myth. But no, these deep-sea behemoths are very real. Back in 2019, NOAA recorded only the second time a giant squid was glimpsed in its deep-sea natural habitat. Then, a Japanese fishermen saw a few of them on the surface, recording them in rarely-seen footage.
Discovered by Swedish divers in 2011, the Baltic Sea Anomaly quickly gained steam in the tabloids as a potential crashed UFO for its unusual shape. It looks, quite frankly, like the Millennium Falcon. However, upon further analyzation and sampling, the strange object appeared to be made of materials known to the area.
Recorded by NOAA in 1997, the “Bloop” was a high-amplitude, super-low-frequency sound that was initially inexplicable. It spawned theories about gigantic underwater monsters, due to its deafening (for the ocean) sound. But alas, scientists eventually determined that the sound was from an ice-quake, or a large iceberg breaking away from an Antarctic glacier.

Shrouded in mystery and controversy, the Yonaguni Monument is like Japan’s real-life version of Atlantis. It has right angles, pyramid-like structures, aspects that would typically resemble a forgotten city, buried beneath the sea. The consensus amongst scientists is that, perhaps, it’s a little bit of both – the rocks and their formations, although unusual, are perfectly natural. But there may have been some human modifications made at some point.
