2019 French Open odds

Try as we might, it's hard to think about Roland-Garros without immediately picturing Rafael Nadal. The now 32-year-old tennis superstar has won the tournament the past two years and dominated the clay court for the better part of the past 15 seasons. It's a much different story on the ladies side of the draw, as several players are in the mix to win the second Grand Slam of 2019. No player has won the French Open in back-to-back years on the ladies side since Germany's Justine Henin won back-to-back-to-back, 2005-2007. Defending champ and tournament favorite, Simona Halep, looks to change that narrative in a little over two weeks from now.

Coric turned pro back in 2013, and he's still only 22 years old. His world ranking has been as high as No. 12, but a pedestrian 15-9 record this season has him ranked 15th ahead of Roland Garros. Coric's all-time French Open record is 7-4 with his best finish being the Round of 32 on several occasions. He's 11-6 on clay over the past 52 weeks and advanced to the quarterfinals of Monte Carlo and the Budapest French Open tune-ups last month.

Since turning pro in 2014, the 24-year-old Russian has competed in two French Opens but was bounced in the Round of 128 the past two years. He has made efforts to gain more clay court experience this season with 12 matches on the surface heading into Roland Garros. Medvedev's clay court tune-ups were highlighted by reaching the finals of the Barcelona Open and semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters last month. Those highs were paired with recent lows, as Medvedev lost in back-to-back first rounds of the Madrid and Rome Masters.

Rafael Nadal made quick work of Wawrinka in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open earlier this month, 1-6, 2-6. At 15-10 overall it's been an arduous season for the 34-year-old, and his 4-5 clay court record over the past 52 weeks doesn't help. However, Wawrinka has reached the French Open final twice over the past four years and beat Novak Djokovic to capture the 2015 title. The Swede is 38-13 all time on Roland Garros' clay court.

Juan Martin del Potro fractured his right kneecap in a match last October. So he's only competed in only seven matches (4-3) to ease into the 2019 season. Despite the long absence del Potro's singles world ranking remains ninth. While he's still searching for his first French Open title, del Potro did reach the 2018 semifinals before losing to Nadal. His 19-8 career record at the French Open includes a semifinals appearance back in 2009 as well when the then 20-year-old lost to Roger Federer in five sets.

Zverev will play in the finals of the Geneva Open — his 14th clay court appearance ahead of the French Open. The 22-year-old German is 15-10 this season, 11-7 on clay over the past year and 6-3 all time in the French Open with a 2018 quarterfinals loss to Dominic Thiem, his best finish. Zverev's 2019 tournament draw avoided Nadal's half of the bracket, but with Djokovic, Thiem and del Potro lurking in the top half, the fifth-best singles player in the world will be tested.

After missing the French Open the past three years, Federer heads into Roland Garros as the third-ranked tennis player in the world. The 37-year-old Swiss superstar has won two titles, is 22-3 overall and 4-1 on clay this season. His 65-16 French Open career record includes just one title, as Rafael Nadal beat him in three consecutive finals (2006-2008) before Federer's 2009 championship win over Robin Soderling finally helped him complete his career Grand Slam.

Keep an eye on this rising 20-year-old Greek star. Tsitsipas is 29-11 with two titles this season, and his world ranking recently earned a bump up to No. 6. A week after winning the clay court championship at Estoril (Portugal), he proceeded to reach the finals of the Madrid Masters where he lost to Novak Djokovic, and the semifinals of the Rome Masters,losing there to Rafa Nadal. He's competed in only three French Open matches and exited in the Round of 64 after a four-set loss to fellow top favorite Dominic Thiem, 2-6, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6.

If not for Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic, Thiem may have already displayed a French Open trophy on his mantel. The fourth-ranked player in the world lost to Djokovic in the 2016 semifinals and Nadal in the 2017 semis and 2018 championship match, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. However, he's personally won more titles on clay (nine) than any other surface and actually beat Nadal in the semifinals of the Barcelona Open, 6-4, 6-4, before beating Danill Medvedev, 6-4, 6-0, to win the clay court title last month.

A French Open championship would earn Djokovic a non-calendar Grand Slam for the second time in his career. The 31-year-old Serb superstar is 23-5 with a 10-2 clay court record this season. In fact, his past three tournaments have all been Roland Garros tune-ups. Djokovic was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters and beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the Madrid Open before a Rome Masters finals loss to Nadal last week, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. Despite the recent defeat, Djokovic is one of only two players to defeat Nadal in the French Open on his way to capturing the 2016 title.

Nadal remains the heavy favorite to win at Roland Garros and for good reason. He's won the French Open 11 times, including eight of the last 11 tournaments. In 89 French Open matches he's nearly unbeatable, boasting an 86-3 record. A recent clay court hiccup to Fabio Fognini in Monte Carlo may have forced some bettors to pause and think about their wagers.Burt those doubts most likely were short-lived, as Nadal bounced back with a convincing tournament win at the Rome Masters.

After reaching the French Open quarterfinals in 2014 and 2015, Muguruza broke through and won the 2016 Grand Slam final over Serena Williams in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. She lost in the 2018 semifinals (1-6, 4-6) to eventual champion, Simona Halep. The 25-year-old Venezuelan is 24-5 all time on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Muguruza is 18-9 with the Monterrey Open hard court title this season.

Svitolina may be a long shot to avoid. She failed to win one match in each of her last three tournaments, which included French Open tune-ups at the Madrid and Italian Opens. Svitolina's first-round French Open match against Venus Williams isn't a cake walk. Despite some early exists, Williams has proved she can advance to the Round of 16, and her 48-21 French Open record reeks of experience compared to Svitolina's 21 Open matches (15-6).

Barty withdrew from this past week's Strasbourg International to focus on rest and rehab of a minor arm injury. She's 24-5 overall with a Miami Open title this season. Barty is attempting to reach the French Open's Round of 32 for the first time in her career. If she survives and advances, a likely sweet 16 matchup against Serena Williams awaits.

Stephens won the first set of her 2018 French Open final against Simona Halep and was up a break in the second before Halep rallied to win 6-3, 4-6, 1-6. Before reaching the semifinals of the Madrid Open earlier this month, Stephens' season-to-date was and, to a certain extent, still is clunky at 14-9 overall. The good news is her 12-4 clay court record over the past 52 weeks makes a strong case for another deep tournament run at Roland Garros. She's 20-7 all time on Paris' clay court.

Williams has won two of the last six French Open women's titles. However, she's played only four matches on clay over the past 52 weeks, and a knee injury forced her to withdraw from the Italian Open tune-up just a few weeks ago. With a mere nine matches on her 2019 resume to date (7-2), she'll have to lean heavily on her French Open experience (63-12, three titles) to navigate through a challenging bracket draw tied to her 10th world singles ranking.

In her final French Open tune-up, the world's No. 2 singles player won the Italian Open. Earlier this season, Pliskova followed up her Brisbane International championship with a deep run to the Australian Open semifinals where she lost in three sets to eventual champ, Naomi Osaka. She enters the season's second Grand Slam 27-7 overall with a 9-7 French Open record and 2017 semifinals best finish.

Since reaching the French Open semifinals back in 2012, Kvitova has failed to advance past the Round of 32 in five of her past six Roland Garros appearances. However, her 28 wins — including a clay court championship victory in Stuttgart last month — ranks among the tour leaders this season. Kvitova is 23-5 on clay dating back to the beginning of 2018.

Over her past six tournaments and since winning the 2019 Australian Open, the No. 1 tennis player in the world has advanced to just one semifinal. Osaka has withdrawn from two tourneys over the past five weeks due to abdominal and hand injuries, but there are no indications she'll miss this Grand Slam. She's 19-5 overall this season and carries a 32-10 Grand Slam record into the 2019 French Open. However, in addition to her rocky season to date, Osaka's best finish at Roland Garros is the third round (twice), which makes her a risky tournament bet.

Bertens has competed in four consecutive clay court tune-up events ahead of the French Open. She advanced to the semifinals in two and upset Simona Halep in the Madrid Open championship match, 6-4, 6-4. The 27-year-old is 26-10 on the season with two titles, but carries a sub-.500 Grand Slam record (26-27) into Roland Garros. Bertens did reach the French Open semifinals back in 2016 but has failed to reach the Round of 16 in each of the past two tournaments.

The third time was the charm for Simona Halep. After losing in the 2014 French Open finals to Maria Sharapova and in 2017 to Jelena Ostapenko, the 27-year-old Romanian gutted out a 2018 Grand Slam championship after dropping the first set to Sloane Stephens. However, with only one other tournament win on her resume since last year's French Open (Rogers Cup - Montreal), some bettors feel there's better value on the oddsboard to be found. Halep's clay court season to date includes a Finals loss to Kiki Bertens three weeks ago before a Round of 32 early exit in Rome the following week.
