Andy Roddick reflected on Jannik Sinner's remarkable triumph in the Wimbledon final, after the World No. 1 finally overcame Carlos Alcaraz following a streak of 5 consecutive defeats against the Spaniard. The World No. 1 clinched his 4th major title, avenging painful losses.
One defeat, in particular, was fresher than any other: the Roland Garros final a month prior, where Sinner squandered three match points in the fourth set, and Alcaraz mounted an epic comeback, taking the title in a fifth-set tie-break after 5 hours and 29 minutes of play.
Roddick, in the lead-up to the new final, had favored Carlos Alcaraz, but he showered Sinner with praise after the Italian surprised the two-time defending champion and broke his 20-match winning streak at the All England Club, especially so soon after the Paris defeat.
“After what happened at Roland Garros, and then to have Carlos 15-40 on his serve when he is two holds away from the Wimbledon title,” Roddick highlighted about the complicated moments Sinner faced in the 4th set this Sunday. “Hitting two massive serves that catch the back fifth of the box to the forehand side up the radar gun to 110mph plus. Just clutch as clutch could be.”
“You could see Darren Cahill standing up and down. Everyone knew it. They have not faded away from the fact of what happened at Roland Garros and they are just like we are going to go on with it.”
“I am a huge fan of both of these guys. I am happy for all their successes. Could not have been more impressed with Jannik Sinner. He is carrying the physical load of trying to beat Alcaraz on this surface, his third final in three years and winning two of them.
“Then you can talk about how you have moved on from Roland Garros, that scar tissue does not go away just because you want it to,” the 2003 US Open champion added. “Overcoming that scar tissue, especially in that fourth set, was just an amazing, amazing display of grit and belief and will ultimately be the redemption story.”
