American tennis celebrated its most successful day at Roland Garros in a very long time on Friday, with three men advancing to the fourth round - and one more with the chance to do so on Saturday. Amanda Anisimova also secured her spot in the next round after a commanding victory against Clara Tauson.
The day’s standout moment came from none other than Tommy Paul. The best US player on clay survived an intense five-setter against Russia’s Karen Khachanov. This was his second consecutive victory in the French Open going the distance. In the next round Paul will face Australia’s last survivor in the men’s draw, Alexei Popyrin.
Frances Tiafoe had a very solid performance to defeat fellow compatriot Sebastian Korda 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-4 in a high-stakes derby on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. Big Foe continues to play very good tennis when it matters the most and will have an opportunity to reach the final 8 on Sunday facing German sensation Daniel Altmaier.
Ben Shelton also had a fantastic performance, knocking down Italy’s Matteo Gigante 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. His reward will be a fourth round clash against the reigning champion, Carlos Alcaraz.
Anisimova’s progress provided yet another bright spot for American women being the first one to reach the fourth round after a commanding triumph over Denmark’s Clara Tauson.
Coco Gauff, Hailey Baptiste, Jessica Pegula will be playing on Saturday to decide if they join Anisimova. Australian Open champion Madison Keys and Sofia Kenin also are in the mix, with the exception that these last two will be facing each other for a spot in the next round. An incredible statement of how in-form has been US tennis lately, competing fiercely in every major.
World No. 106, Ethan Quinn could also be mentioned in this successful campaing. The 21-year-old player will be facing Netherland’s Tallon Griekspoor tomorrow to secure a spot in the week 2 of competition.
