Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic sent shockwaves on Wednesday as he announced his separation from his long-time coach, Goran Ivanisevic . The 36-year-old revealed that they had mutually decided to part ways. With the position of Djokovic’s head coach vacant, speculation is rife about who will replace Ivanisevic.
Former American tennis ace Andy Roddick was also asked about this whole fiasco, and the former World No. 1 had no direct answer. Roddick was left aback by the decision, like everyone else. More than the split, the time at which Djokovic decided to part ways with his coach shocked Roddick.
The American said that it was a strange decision considering the fact that only eight weeks are left before the second Grand Slam tournament of the season- the French Open. Roddick also expressed his views about the potential reason behind the separation.
I was surprised. You don't make moves in March or April. There has to be something to set this, in midseason. Djokovic has turned his entire team. I am curious to see who he goes to next. It seems like he always ends with Vajda when something like this happens. Novak takes advice from a limited number of people. So, I am curious to see what his next steps are. Andy Roddick left guessing about Novak Djokovic’s next coach
Andy Roddick was thrown the question of who could be Novak Djokovic‘s next coach now that he has split up with Goran Ivanisevic.
The American did not have one name who could end up coaching the Serbian tennis ace. However, Roddick looked convinced that it would be someone from the list of Djokovic’s ex-coaches.
Roddick believes that Boris Becker looks like the top contender because he is not working with anyone at the moment. However, the American refrained from making an outright prediction. But Roddick is convinced that Djokovic will not go with an entirely new setup.
I don't know, it's a tough one. I just think that it would be hard for someone 37 years old to go with an entirely new scenario. You are into a shortish timeline going into the Roland Garros. My instinct is that he goes into something known and familiar...It is purely speculative but it wouldn't shock me to see [Boris] Becker into that conversation. Andy Roddick said.
Notably, apart from Ivanisevic, Novak Djokovic has worked with the likes of Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, Marian Vajda, Mario Ancic, Nikola Pilic, and several others. Among all, Djokovic received the most success with Ivanisevic. Meanwhile, Becker is second on the list of players with whom Djokovic won six Grand Slam titles before they parted ways.
With the German ace recently freeing himself from the coaching duties of Holger Rune, Becker is available. Hence, it might not come as a surprise if the two stars join hands again.
