Carlos Alcaraz avenged his loss to Taylor Fritz, winning the Japan Open final 6-4, 6-4 to claim his 8th title of the season. The Spaniard has now won 43 of his last 45 matches, with the only defeat during that run coming against Fritz in the Laver Cup two weeks ago.

Alcaraz now totals 24 titles as a professional across 31 finals, with this being his 8th title in an ATP 500 tournament. On his way to the final, Alcaraz comfortably defeated Sebastian Baez (6-4, 6-2), Zizou Bergs (6-4, 6-3), and Brandon Nakashima (6-2, 6-4), before surviving a tough three-set battle against Casper Ruud (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) to reach his 9th consecutive final.

Alcaraz secures tense first set amid umpire confrontation

The start of the match saw both players hold their service games well, though Alcaraz earned his first break chance in Fritz's very first service game. The set was marked by a controversy between Alcaraz and the chair umpire, when the Spaniard complained about the short amount of time he had between points to prepare to serve. "Do you think it's normal for me to finish a point at the net and not even have time to go for the balls and serve? It's obvious you've never played tennis in your life."

Alcaraz had squandered up to five break points until the score reached 4-4, while Fritz had yet to earn his first opportunity. It was then that another pair of chances arrived for Alcaraz to break, and he finally took the lead in the set. The six-time major champion did not hesitate to close the set on his serve, winning 6-4, after winning an incredible 85% of points on his first serve.

Alcaraz crushes final resistance in dominant second set

After a tight first set—in which Alcaraz always felt in control of the match—the start of the second set heavily favored Alcaraz. He immediately secured an opening break and then consolidated it with his serve to go up 2-0. Fritz managed to defend one service game, but immediately a good run from Alcaraz followed, securing the double break and cruising ahead to a 5-1 lead.

When the match seemed decided, Fritz managed to regain his service rhythm and capitalized on the pressure facing his rival, who was one game away from the title. Alcaraz served for the win at 5-2, but Fritz earned and converted a break chance, managing to narrow the gap. However, another opportunity remained for Alcaraz, who served for the victory again at 5-4, and this time, he successfully closed it out (6-4, 6-4)

The World No. 1 avenged his Laver Cup defeat from a couple of weeks ago and claimed his 8th title of the season. Alcaraz successfully defended the 500 points he won at the China Open last year and maintains his position at the top of the ranking (11,540 points), still waiting for the result of Jannik Sinner's final match in Beijing this Wednesday, where a title win could see the Italian close the gap slightly on the Spaniard.
